§ 28.06.060. Percentage of living materials.

  • Unless otherwise specified, required landscape area shall consist of a minimum of fifty-five (55) percent in ground surface covering by living grass or other plant materials. The foliage crown of trees that may extend over monolithic paved surfaces beyond the required landscaped area or over nonliving surfaces within the required landscaped area shall not be used in the fifty-five (55) percent or other required percentage calculation. The remaining forty-five (45) percent of the required landscape area may be covered with bark, wood chips, rock, bricks, stone, or similar materials (monolithic paving not included). An effective weed barrier shall be required in nonliving landscaped areas. The use of nonliving materials in required landscape areas for other than mulching around trees, shrubs and planting beds shall be on the basis of a landscape plan submitted for approval to the planning department.
