§ 18.40.470. Guardrails and handrails.

  • The railings of every structure shall be kept in good repair and structurally sound.

    Guardrails shall be balustraded or shall have intermediate rails in conformance with the code under which they were built, but in no case shall the spacing of intermediate rails or ornamental pattern be such that a sphere nine inches in diameter can pass through.

    Guardrails shall be provided when there is clear danger of accident or personal injury.

    Guardrails shall be provided for balconies, landings or porches which are more than thirty inches above grade.

    Guardrails shall be provided for roofs used for other than service of the building.

    Handrails shall be provided for all steps or stairways having four risers or more.

    Handrails shall be provided for pedestrian ramps with a slope exceeding one foot in ten feet.

    Handrails shall be placed not less than thirty inches nor more than thirty-eight inches above the tread level.
