§ 18.40.480. Stairs and ramps.

  • Every inside and outside stair landing and step and every appurtenance thereto shall be so constructed as to be safe to use and capable of supporting the load that normal use may cause to be placed thereon, and shall be kept in sound condition and good repair.

    Treads or risers that evidence excessive wear or are broken, warped, or loose shall be repaired.

    The slope of a pedestrian ramp shall not exceed one foot in eight feet. Ramps shall be roughened or shall be of approved noslip material.

    Elevators, shafts, ducts and other vertical openings shall be enclosed as required for stairways in Section 18.40.500. Doors shall be noncombustible or as approved by the building official.

    Stairs (except fire escapes as provided in Section 18.40.500) shall have steps with a minimum run of nine inches and a maximum rise of eight inches, and a minimum net width between handrails of thirty inches.
