§ 18.40.490. Chimneys and towers.

  • All chimneys, cooling towers, smoke stacks, and similar appurtenances shall be maintained structurally safe, sound, and in good repair. All exposed surfaces of metal or wood shall be protected from the elements and against decay or rust by periodic application of weathercoating material such as paint or similar surface treatment.

    All chimneys, flues and flue connectors shall be maintained in a safe condition, shall be structurally sound and free from defect, performing the function for which they are designed and are used. Chimneys, flues, gas vents, or other draft-producing equipment shall provide sufficient draft to develop the rated output of the connected equipment. Chimneys, flue linings, flue connectors, flues, gas vents, and their supports shall be structurally safe, durable, smoke-tight and capable of withstanding the action of flue gases.

    All vent pipe connections to a masonry chimney or flue shall be made with a slip joint, the thimble to be cemented into the chimney and not to extend into the chimney beyond the chimney lining. Single-walled metal vents or flues shall be not less than six inches from combustible materials and shall not pass through walls, floors, ceilings, or partitions. There shall be one inch of clearance for Type B double-walled metal pipe. A gas appliance vent pipe may be connected to the vent pipe of another gas appliance through a suitable "Y" junction fitting provided proper increase in vent size is made to accommodate the increased volume of flue gases.
