§ 2.28.045. Other governmental service.

  • (a)

    Each employee of the city hired on or after April 1, 2001, may utilize prior documented Sedgwick County governmental service to meet all or part of the seven-year vesting requirement. If such prior documented service credit together with purchased service credit, if any, is equal to or exceeds seven years, the employee then must make an election as provided for in Section 2.28.060. The calculation of any pension benefit will be based only upon service with the city.

    (b)

    Each employee of the city hired on or after April 1, 2001 may purchase up to but not to exceed ten years of prior documented Sedgwick County governmental service upon payment of the full actuarial cost of the service credit being purchased to include actuarial fees for determining the actuarial cost. Service for retirement purposes shall include purchased service credit and actual service as a participant in the Wichita Employees' Retirement System. If such purchased service credit, together with governmental service credit described in (a) above, if any, is equal to or exceeds seven years, the employee then must make an election as provided for in Section 2.28.060.

    (c)

    Each noncommissioned employee of the city hired on or after April 1, 2001 directly from Sedgwick County as a result of a consolidation of services, having met the vesting requirements of the Kansas Public Employees' Retirement System (KPERS), may:

    (1)

    Remain a member of KPERS; or

    (2)

    Become a member of the Wichita Employees' Retirement System under (a) or (b) above; or

    (3)

    Become a member of the Wichita Employees' Retirement System under Section 2.28.040 of this chapter;

    (4)

    Selection of option (1), (2) or (3) above shall be exercised at the date of employment with the city.

    (d)

    Prior Sedgwick County governmental service shall be documented on forms prescribed by pension management. It shall be the responsibility of such noncommissioned employee to obtain the required prior service documentation.
